Sri Krishna Chaitanya
Nimai Chaitanya was born to a pious couple - Pandit Jagannath and Sachidevi on the full moon day of Phalguna Saka 1407 ( February 1485) at Nawadeep, Bengal. He was also fondly called Gauranga, meaning golden hue in colour. His elder brother Visaryopa becamer a sannyasi. One day Pandit Jagannaath dreamt that Nimai also would beome one. Shocked at this dream, Jangannath soon passed away.
Nawadeepa at that time was a great place of learning and especially famous for logic and dialectic skill. Within a short period of six years Nimai became a great pandit and in dialectic skills vanquishing all.
He was married to Lakshmi Priya who soon died. He again married another beautiful girl, Vishnu Priya.
Once he went to Gaya where he was intiated by Ishwar Puri. This is his first change in life when he first saw the foot prints of Lord Vishnu in the Vishnupadi temple. He became intoxicated with divine ecstasy. Returning home, he would spend hours in Namasankirtan and would return home often very late at night.

At this time he met Keshava Bharati and resolved to become a sannyasi. He was to go to Mathura, but his mother brought him back to Shantipur. With her he went to Puri where he stayed for nearly 25 years.
Once he went on a tour to South India for six years visiting many pilgrime centres. From there he went to Vrindavan where he had a mystic vision of Sri Krishna Leela. His teachings to Goswami - a disciple - is the well known handbook of Vaishnava faith. From there he returned back to Puri wherein he stayed for nearly 12 years.
Here he led a very austere sannyasa life spending major portion of his time in ecstatic state and at the age of 47 he merged in the idol of Lord Jagganath.
Even though he composed hundreds of slokas only eight of them _ Siksha Ashtakam - extoling the glory of Nama Samkirtanam, has come down to us.
